Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: 5th U.S. Cavalry Regiment; 2nd U.S. Infantry Regiment; 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, Department of the Rappahannock; Army of the Potomac; District of Henrico. General description of the collection: The Ralph G. Newman collection consists of a document from the U.S. 5th Cavalry Regiment and 71 official documents and official / personal correspondence of Marsena R. Patrick. There is a muster roll of Company A, 5th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, March-April, 1865, prepared on April 30, 1865. The Patrick materials were prepared during the Second (2nd) Seminole War, the Mexican War, and the Civil War with the Civil War papers being the more substantive. The papers consist of routine vouchers, statements, and other official information. The seven personal letters were written by Patrick from 1865 to 1878. They reminisce on wartime affairs, especially the Second (2nd) Manassas (Bull Run) Campaign, comment on veterans activities, and touch upon Patrick's involvement in politics.

Patrick was born in Hounsfield, Jefferson County, New York (near Watertown). He worked on the Erie Canal and briefly taught school. He was appointed to the United States Military Academy in nearby West Point, and graduated in 1835.
